POSITION SUMMARY:
The Aquatics Coordinator is responsible for outdoor aquatic programs and activities and provides leadership and support to staff responsible for designing and delivering those activities. They will work to strengthen relationships with members and build communities around common goals while maintaining safety in the pool, on the deck and surrounding areas. The Aquatics Coordinator will perform these functions in accordance with the mission, values, principles, and practices established by the administrative staff, governing committees and Board of Directors of the YMCA of the Triangle Area.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations. Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within area of responsibility.
- Thoughtfully delivering the mission of the YMCA while making themselves available to serve and support any member or participant needs.
- Assists to ensure delivery of high quality aquatic programs that support member health and wellness goals plus a positive member experience.
- Maintains high level of visibility to ensure top quality member engagement through participating on the Engagement team which includes working evenings and weekends.
- Performs skill and safety checks of aquatics staff under the supervision of the Aquatics Director.
- Assists in the planning and implementation of staff meetings as needed.
- Provides administrative support for the department as needed including, returning phone calls, typing correspondence, producing flyers and maintaining files.
- Assists in Y Activities and special events as assigned by the Supervisor.
- Leads efforts for the aquatics team on site to effectively engage with members by teaching swim lessons, lifeguarding, and assisting with other programs as deemed necessary.
- Assists in the oversight and management of lifeguards and swim instructors and connects with swim team staff.
- Develops the monthly schedules of lifeguarding, swim lessons, aqua fitness classes, etc. according to program needs under the supervision of the Aquatics Director.
- Maintains an open line of communication with direct supervisor, guards, instructors and branch staff.
- Assists in the orienting, acclimating and training of new lifeguards to the facility, programs and the YMCA.
- Maintains the health, sanitation and clarity of both pools. Performs required chemical testing/equipment checks when not guarding and takes appropriate action. Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving and prior to shift ending. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
- Assists in connecting of Aquatic Programs and other aspects of the branch ensuring a positive and safe environment. Supports the Aquatics Director with oversight of swim lessons to ensure safety, on time scheduling and accurate reporting of children’s progress.
- Leads and attends all staff meetings and in-service trainings. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
- Aids the Aquatics Director to ensure all staff are certified in YUSA Lifeguarding, Basic Life Support, AED, Oxygen and First Aid. Works with Certifications Coordinator to schedules recertification classes when needed.
- Assists in ensuring departmental compliance with all branch and association standards in programs, administration, business and operations.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma/GED and 2-3 years of related experience.
- Experience in leading others, pool programming, pool maintenance, volunteer cultivation, staff development and supervision.
- Must be professional, courteous and friendly, have a high level of initiative and be a self-starter.
- Must have excellent communication skills, be well organized, and be able to respond appropriately in a dynamic, fluid environment.
- Ability to determine and set priorities; as well as the capacity to respond and handle multiple tasks appropriately in a dynamic and fast-paced work environment is critical.
- Must meet all requirements to physically perform all necessary rescue and survival skills.
- Must have Basic Life Support, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen certifications prior to start date.
- Must have or be willing to obtain Lifeguard Instructor certifications within first 60 days.
- CPO certification preferred but not required.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Availability to work weekends and evenings.
- Multi-lingual desired but not required.
